SACRED SONGS.
Only, O Lord, in thy dear love, Fit us for perfect rest above; And help us, this and every day, To live more nearly as we pray.
EVENING.
John Keble.
Sun of my soul! thou Saviour dear, It is not night, if thou be near; Oh, may no earth-born cloud arise, To hide thee from thy servant's eyes!
When the soft dews of kindly sleep My wearied eyelids gently steep, Be my last thought, how sweet to rest Forever on my Saviour's breast!
Abide with me from morn till eve, For without thee I can not live; Abide with me when night is nigh, For without thee I dare not die.
Come near and bless us when we wake, Ere through the world our way we take; Till, in the ocean of thy love, We lose ourselves in heaven above.
O SACRED HEAD, NOW WOUNDED.
Abridged from Paul Gerhardt.
O sacred Head! now wounded,
With grief and shame weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded
With thorns, thy only crown. O sacred Head! what glory,
What bliss, till now, was thiue! Yet, though despised and gory,
I joy to call thee mine!
What thou, my Lord, hast suffered,
Was all for sinners' gain ; Mine, mine was the transgression,
But thine the deadly pain. Lo! here I fall, my Saviour,
'Tis I deserve thy place: Look on me with thy favor,
"Vouchsafe to me thy grace.
What language can I borrow
To thank thee, dearest Friend, For this thy dying sorrow,
Thy pity without end! Oh, make me thine forever;
And should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never
Outlive my love to thee!
Be near me when I'm dying;
Oh, show thy cross to me; And for my succor flying,
Come, Lord, and set me free! These eyes, new faith receiving,
From Jesus shall not move; For he who dies believing
Dies safely in thy love.
GLORY TO THEE, MY GOD, THIS NIGHT. Bishop Ken.
Glory to thee, my God, this night, For all the blessings of the light! Keep me, oh, keep me, King of kings, Beneath thine own almighty wings!
Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son, The ill that I this day have done ; That with the world, myself, and thee I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.
Teach me to live, that I may dread The grave as little as my bed ; Teach me to die, that so I may Rise glorious at the awful day.
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow ; Praise him, all creatures here below ; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
